Before plantingLand preparation and shade
Clear the ground in new areas; in replanting areas remove old cardamom plants. Carry out shade regulation, terracing and pit preparation during summer.
Cardamom is a sciophyte and requires filtered light. Regulate shade during March-April in new areas and May-June after summer showers in established plantations. Where shade is dense, remove selected branches to retain about 40-60% filtered light. Where tree fall creates open gaps, establish suitable fast-growing shade trees such as Vernonia arborea, Acrocarpus fraxinifolius, Toona ciliata, Syzygium cumini or jackfruit, while considering local pest-host risks.
Balance matters: Excess shade and moisture favour capsule rot and leaf blotch; exposed conditions increase heat and can worsen some pests and Fusarium stress.
Field layoutTerraces, pits and planting
Pit: 90 × 90 × 45 cmSpacing: 3 × 3 mDensity: ~1,111 plants/ha
- On slopes, form terraces along contours to reduce erosion and runoff.
- Prepare pits before the monsoon. Fill about one-third with topsoil and another one-third with a 1:3 mixture of organic manure and topsoil.
- Plant a high-yielding variety adapted to the location. Stake plants against wind.
- Plant diagonally to the slope to reduce runoff.
- Mulch immediately with dry leaves to conserve moisture and protect soil.
Ground coverWeed management
Carry out 2-3 rounds of hand weeding at the plant base, typically in May, September and December/January, with slash weeding between rows. Avoid deep spade weeding because it loosens soil, injures shallow roots and increases erosion. Reuse suitable weed biomass as mulch. Mechanical weed cutters can reduce labour and improve timeliness during establishment.
Summer protectionIrrigation methods
Irrigate during summer or prolonged dry spells, especially when young tillers and panicles are developing. Harvest rainwater without damaging the slope or ecosystem.
| Method | Guide recommendation | Key point |
|---|
| Hose | 20-30 L per plant at weekly intervals, adjusted to clump size | Apply around the plant base without saturation |
| Sprinkler | Equivalent to 35-45 mm rain at fortnightly intervals | Useful for larger blocks and microclimate |
| Drip/micro-sprinkler | 5-6 L per clump per day | Efficient and controllable |
| Karnataka hose reference | 40 L per clump every 10-20 days | Reported to increase yield under those conditions |
| Fogger/mist | Site-specific scheduling | Maintains favourable humidity for growth, flowering and seed set |
Prevent rot: Do not allow the plant base to remain excessively wet for long periods. Ensure drainage before increasing irrigation frequency.
