Inspect unopened leaves, leaf sheaths, panicles, capsules, pseudostems, roots and lower leaf surfaces. Use seasonal peaks to intensify scouting.

Remove

Trash and prune dry material, destroy infested tillers and collect visible caterpillars. Keep the plant base clean without damaging roots.

Conserve

Protect predators, parasitoids and honeybees by avoiding calendar spraying, excessive doses and repeated broad-spectrum insecticides.

Damage: Scabby, malformed or shrivelled capsules; stunted panicles; underdeveloped seeds and reduced aroma. The guide estimates 45-48% crop loss under serious infestation.

Season/biology: Highest population during February-May; low in rainy periods.

Management focus: Trash/prune in January, May and September; conserve natural enemies; monitor and use only currently approved insecticides at label rates when thresholds justify treatment.

Damage: Larvae bore into tender panicles, unopened leaf spindles, immature capsules and later pseudostems. Panicle portions dry, capsules become empty and dead-heart symptoms appear.

Season/biology: Important periods: January-February, May-June and September-October.

Management focus: Remove infested tillers in September-October, conserve parasitoids such as Agrypon and Apanteles, and target early larvae within about 15-20 days of adult emergence if an approved treatment is required.

Damage: Root feeding reduces nutrient uptake, causing yellowing and weakening; severe in less-shaded areas. Adults are shiny blue-green beetles.

Season/biology: Adults March-April and August-September; grubs April-July and September-January.

Management focus: Avoid or carefully manage alternate host shade trees, mulch with locally recommended repellent leaves, earth-up and de-trash, and use locally validated entomopathogenic nematodes where available.

Damage: Narrow leaves, thick veins, shortened internodes, rosetting, stunting and heavily branched roots with galls.

Season/biology: Persist in infested soil and roots.

Management focus: Rotate nursery sites, avoid susceptible alternate hosts and intercrops, apply Paecilomyces lilacinus with compost where locally recommended, and use neem cake based on clump size.

Damage: Larvae bore into flower buds, flowers and immature capsules; a single larva can empty many capsules.

Season/biology: Usually June-September, especially in some Karnataka pockets.

Management focus: Monitor flowers and capsules; remove infested material and rely on locally approved IPM if economic damage develops.

Damage: Nymphs and adults suck sap; leaves yellow and dry. Honeydew supports black sooty mould that reduces photosynthesis.

Season/biology: Often worsened by repeated or excessive broad-spectrum insecticide use.

Management focus: Use yellow sticky traps between rows for monitoring and suppression; avoid unnecessary pyrethroid use and insecticide mixtures.

Damage: Group defoliators feed first on shade trees and later on cardamom leaves.

Damage: Usually important as the vector of Katte and Kokke kandu rather than for direct feeding damage.

Season/biology: Population often high in January-February; also survives on aroids.

Management focus: Use virus-free plants, remove infected clumps and symptomatic alternate hosts, conserve beneficials and manage vectors through need-based IPM.

Conservation measures

  • Use insecticides only when necessary, at recommended rates, rather than by calendar.
  • Combine cultural, mechanical and behavioural methods with need-based treatments.
  • Before an unavoidable spray, close honeybee hives on the previous evening with moist cloth and provide sugar syrup; reopen the day after treatment, following local beekeeper and label guidance.
  • The source recommends at least four honeybee hives per acre.
  • Renew old combs at suitable seasons to reduce wax moth problems.
  • Maintain about 50% shade and flowering trees such as Vernonia, which can support honeybees in January-February.
